WHAT’S NEW?

• The defunct Carol Theater in Monroe has been purchased, with plans now underway to refurbish the landmark and re-open it, probably as a second-run movie theater. Unconfirmed reports have come in saying the adjacent drug store and ice cream parlor buildings have also been bought with a new restaurant possibly being built there… we’ll see, but it sounds like a great night out. With The Chameleon theater and youth-oriented “night club,” kitty-corner to the Monroe city offices, also coming soon, it looks like Monroe may once again become a entertainment destination for the valley.
• Brigham Young University professor, C. Arden Pope III, is coming to Richfield this Thursday, February 15 for a free presentation. Dr. Pope is recognized as the world’s greatest expert in air pollution and its effect on public health. He is the recipient of many awards, most recently having received the Karl Maeser Distinguished Faculty Award, BYU’s highest honor. In partnership with LDS Hospital, Dr. Pope has just completed an in-depth study on the effects of air pollution. Dr. Pope’s free presentation is sponsored by Sevier Citizens, who spared no expense in bringing him here, and will be on Thursday, February 15, at the Richfield Quality Inn, and the general public is welcomed. The Quality Inn Conference Center is located at 540 South Main Street, Richfield, Utah. Call 435-896-2822 for more information.
Regarded by BYU as their top professor, he is sure to offer an engaging, interesting, and authoritative presentation. Dr. Pope has passed on speaking here in Richfield in the past, since most of his speeches are usually made to groups as distinguished as the United Nations, but since the Utah Supreme Court had said such positive things to say about the group in its recent decisions in their favor, he has decided to come and talk to us about what he has learned in his distinguished career.
This is your best chance to ask the questions you have about the impact a coal-fired power plant would have on the health of your children, the elderly, and others — from an independent authority, who is not only a truly authoritative source, but the *world’s best* source on the issue. Mothers, fathers, the elderly, BYU alumni, government and religious officials, the media, and other local folks who care about our area are expected to attend this notable occassion. Let’s show him that his time here in Sevier County is well-spent by all showing up and giving him a warm welcome.
• If you’ve been lucky enough to catch local western group Latigo, or if you are wondering what you’ve been missing, be sure to stop by their web site at http://latigowest.com and get a copy of their latest CD, “Ridin.’” The CD hit the top ten on the Western charts, and offers some really great music for all to enjoy.
• Looking for a health boost? Talk to Larry or Janae Blake about their new Himalayan Goji Juice health products, or visit their web site at http://larryandjanae.freelife.com .
• Reporters around the country are looking for McDonalds which are serving their new french fries, cooked in their new transfat-free oil. But all you have to do is stop by the Richfield McDonalds, and try out the new, healthier fries today!
• The Cowboy Corral in Elsinore, located next to the Post Office, has been sold to local resident Joe Jensen. He’ll be keeping up the find tradition of good food and fun at the Sevier Valley landmark. Be sure to stop by for an inexpensive lunch on fridays, when they offer an all-you-can-eat buffet accompanied with fun folk music from Beauty and the Beasts. A great time!
• Nationwide Floor & Window Coverings is now offering 2″ Faux Wood Blinds at a savings of 40% off regular retail price. “These blinds are Guaranteed For Life! They also have a gigantic carpet sale on now and will meet or beat any legitimate quote in the valley! We are proud to say we have the best installers working with us in the area, and we are the ONLY shop-at-home-service around in ALL of South-Central Utah!”
• Many shoppers have noticed egg prices have gone from prices as low as 60¢ up to almost $2 a dozen. This, after a few weeks ago, many local stores had no eggs at all for most of a week. The reason? International demand for eggs spiked after a bird flu scare overseas resulted in U.S. stores having no eggs available for several days. After Pres. Bush announced the federal government was going to push for alternative energy sources from now, the demand for ethanol sky-rocketed. Ethanol, an alternative to petroleum products, is produced from corn which is also the primary ingredient in chicken feed. Corn prices are now at a ten-year high, which has sharply increased the resulting cost of eggs. We’re not agricultural experts, bit if you’re a farmer wondering what to grow this year, it looks like corn might be a good way to go!
• Utah’s governor is following suit to the President’s announcement, with his own push toward alternative energies which will not harm public health or the environment, as older technologies do. In support, the Sierra Club has presented a roadmap on how to reduce U.S. global warming emissions by 60-80% reduction before 2050. The roadmap was designed by numerous noted scientists and congressmen to move the country beyond discussing whether it can be done, to specifics on how it can be done. “Utah is certainly taking a positive step with Governor Huntsman’s new energy efficiency goals,” said Tim Wagner, with the Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club. “But in a state where 95 percent of our electricity already comes from coal, such efforts will be completely undone with our backwards proposals to build four more coal fired power plants that will collectively add approximately 13 million tons of CO2 annually. It’s time the Governor stepped up and got serious about addressing this critical issue by saying ‘no’ to additional coal plants and ‘yes’ to full-tilt renewable development.” Hopefully, such renewable energy products would provide a boost to our local farmers and economy.
• What do you do when your favorite disc gets scratched and won’t play? Madcap Video in Richfield offers the Azuradisc Resurfacing system that makes your audio CDs, DVDs, video games, or CD-ROMs look — and play — like new. The cost is only $3.50 per disc, much lower than the cost of a replacement!

• Home Depot has had surveyors out on the land they purchased near Richfield’s south I-70 interchange. The store is expected by many to be completed by the end of the summer. The parent company continues to struggle as it competes with Lowes nationwide. Home Depot’s new president announced this week they will shed the wholesale arm of the company which focused on professional contractors.
