WHAT’S NEW?
• Many people have heard that Home Depot is backing out on building their new store near the I-70 Interchange. While the national change is struggling somewhat in its on-going battle with Lowe’s, Ace and other businesses (as reported previously), this rumor does not appear to be true, with the scheduled date of completion still set for October 4. The construction manager for the project confirmed to Ideal Living that the rumors are untrue, and the project — which is awaiting approval on minor changes to the plans — is well underway, with the grounds nearly ready for pouring the concrete foundation. If you look at the site just east of Richfield’s I-70 interchange, you will note the approximate size of the store on the elevated land, with the garden center planned for the lower elevation toward the east. Note that this will not be one of their larger stores, but is part of a newer, smaller size of Home Depot stores.
Similar to Wal-Mart, Home Depot stores often host strip malls on their lots, offering retail space for a variety of businesses, generally including a fast food establishment. Reportedly a strip mall, offering retail commercial space is already in planning for inclusion on the Home Depot property.
One can appreciate some nervousness in the community associated with this, and the many other construction projects in our area, as our area begins to grow exponentially. It appears that major growth is already upon us and will continue to come (barring a recession). The challenge before our civic leaders, and all of us, as concerned citizens, is to manage the growth so that it improves our area, without compromising our quality of living — especially in the safety of our children to walk, play and enjoy our community — now, and in the future.
To keep up with our area’s latest developments, be sure to visit IdealLivingMedia.com. And tell your friends! Now, for more of the latest…
• Did you know that anyone can search Sevier County property records, over the Internet? Just visit http://qdocs.sevierutah.net/recorder/web/login.jsp , click the “Login without an account” button, and search away.
• Now that the Richfield City Library will formally reopen soon, please note the Library offers online searching for books, periodicals, and to check the status of your account at: http://richfieldlibrary.com
• After many delays, the construction and fire repairs on the Sevier County Government Building is complete, and county offices are gradually re-opening, with employees currently moving back from their temporary office locations.
• The new Fairfield Inn is now being built directly in front of the Home Depot project near the I-70 Interchange, next to Wingers. Like the adjacent Hampton Inn, it is owned by old Dr. Greenwood, who recently sold the Day’s Inn.
• The Garden Grill at the Day’s Inn has closed, to allow the Sorenson family to focus on the expanding Ideal Dairy. Indeed, the extended family has a lot on their plate, especially while Kristie undergoes surgery to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, the former restaurant space is being converted to the “Tomato Vine,” as a sister restaurant to Salina’s italian restaurant.
• There is a report of the Jorgensen’s bringing a Gold’s Gym coming to Richfield, as part of a development, south towards the airport.
• Larry Blake of Blake Electric has bought the building next door to his business on 100 North. He intends to demolish the current building and build retail space in its stead. If you are interested in operating a business in the new retail space, you may contact Larry at 896-5468.
• Corey Winkel owner of 5 Star Rental (and AAA ATV Rental), has sold the location to Ahern Rental, a Las Vegas-based tool and construction equipment rental firm. Their web site is at http://ahernrental.com/ . The business will be able to provide a wider selection of tools to choose from, all at like-new quality.
• A Microtel Inn is in planning to be built immediately behind the Comfort Inn. With so many hotels at the south I-70 interchange, look for announcements for new restaurants to appear in the immediate area as well.
• If you are looking for a new or remodeled business or home, remember to contact Tooter Ogden (former owner of Ideal Dairy), who is the new sales agent for QHB – Quality Home Builders, which is owned by longtime local resident Tom Bogh. QHB is currently building several beautiful homes in Northeast Richfield, in the new development off of 500 East. Also, they are expanding their capabilities to now include steel buildings, suitable for all uses. So, if you are looking for a highly-recommended, easy-to-work-with contractor, contact Tooter Ogden at 979-6310.
• In a move which could effect the prospects for the troubled coal-fired power plant proposed to be built in Sigurd, the group Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment has been receiving enormous media attention in calling on the Governor to halt construction of the proposed coal plant, as well as the third plant planned for Delta’s IPP coal power plant. Reportedly, their presentation struck Gov. Huntsman when they explained that children who are growing in areas polluted like the Wasatch Front fail to develop their full lung capacity, leaving them with permanently crippled lungs with only 80% capacity.
The doctors, who are mostly employed at LDS Hospital in SLC, reference the many research studies performed by BYU professor C. Arden Pope, the world’s leading researcher in studying the effects of air pollution on public health. Dr. Pope was recently brought to Richfield by Sevier Citizens, who gave an entertaining presentation at the Quality Inn. Dr. Pope explained that air pollution, that smoke is made up of tiny, “fine particulates,” which body has no effective defense for, and which are toxic in themselves. These fine particles — which are invisible to the naked eye — stay suspended in the air for weeks and months. As a result, the lung’s air sacs are damaged, the heart fibulates, and the arterties contract and expand erratically, loosing blood clots into the bloodstream where they trigger heart attacks and strokes. Indeed, much of his research is based upon examining hospital death records during winter inversions along the Wasatch Front, and when Geneva Steel was operating vs. when it was down. In short, Dr. Pope explained that since these particulates are so dangerous, there are no “safe” levels of pollution and would effect not only the Sevier Valley, but the entire state, directly bringing a measurable increase in deaths and miscarriages.
You may view Dr. Pope’s presentation on channel 10 on CentraCom televsion, and online at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3665914907157343039 .
• CentraCom is looking for local customers of theirs to try out their new Internet telephone service. The service will be completely free during the beta test period, which is expected to go on for some months. The service requires a CentraCom broadband Internet connection, but uses a regular telephone and can call any regular or cell phone number. When the service is rolled out, a low monthly charge will apply, but beyond that, Internet telephone services are free, including long distance and most international calls. Testing of sound quality so far is already high, at a 4-out-of-5 rating. To sign up for this test — which has no obligation other than occasional feedback about your experience during the testing period — please reply to this email, and we will forward your contact info to CentraCom.
And, if you don’t already have CentraCom television and Internet service, what are you waiting for? Sign up for their cheaper-than-satellite services at http://www.centracom.com/idealliving/ , or mention Ideal Living when you call, to get one or two months’ free service.
