WHAT’S NEW?
• October brings lots of fun, fall events to Central Utah. Here’s a few local events coming up soon:
• Win the Warlock! Win a fine, B.C. Rich “Warlock Metal Master” electric guitar at the Monroe Halloween Block Party at Monroe City Lions Park on October 31, 2007 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Fun for the whole family: Costume contest, Coloring contest, Pumpkin carving contest, Guitar giveaway and live band, Mechanical Skies (a group made up of Henry Reese, Monroe Main Center owner, and several local kids in his guitar classes), along with DJ music.
Entrance for the Halloween block party, as well as entries for the guitar giveaway, will be food items donated to Central Utah Food Sharing, the food pantry serving the Six County area. To see the guitar (which is a fine, well-made, musical instrument) (and get in extra entries), bring food donations — canned foods are fine — to Monroe Main Center, located kitty-corner from the Monroe city offices at the corner of Main and Center streets.
The Halloween Block Party will be the first of an annual event, and is sponsored by many Monroe businesses: Bullies, Chisholm Family Dentistry (who, it is believed, will be passing out toothbrushes), Crisp Grocery, Monroe Inn, Monroe Main Center, MMC Chameleon Room, SageBrush Grill, and Utah Independent Bank. For more information, call Monroe Main Center at (435) 527-0915 or visit their web page at http://pageproducer.sisna.com/mmcmonroe .
• Lazy P Farms is hosting a Corn Maze on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 to 11 p.m., and also on Monday, October 22, from 6 – 9 p.m. The maze is located at 1150 East 500 North in Richfield out Glenwood road, behind the pet store and nursery. For more info, call (435) 201-9501. Sponsored by Classic Jack Construction.
• Look for the BBQ truck offering delicious, southern-style barbecued beef, pork and chicken each Friday & Saturday (and sometimes Mondays) in front of Richfield’s Larsens Ace Hardware store. Choose from one of several sauces from mild & sweet to spicy. Plates come with corn bread or roll, potato salad or cole slaw, and your choice of ribs or pulled (shredded) meats. Fantastically good. Tell them Ideal Living sent you!
• There will be a new store inside of Madcap Video at 44 N. 100 West, called the West Side Ride. It will have skateboards, and parts, along with apparel (hats, shirts, shoes, etc.) and will be managed by Meredith Peterson and Rod Burger.
• Musical group Jericho Road will be performing at the Sevier Valley Center Theater on Monday, November 5th, at 7 p.m. The concert by the popular, Utah-based, Backstreet Boys-style band will benefit the Pinnacle Foundation, and will include a silent auction with local businesses’ support. The evening promises fun entertainment for the whole family. To hear their music, view videos, or learn more about the band, visit their web site at www.jerichoroadmusic.com or their MySpace profile at myspace.com/jerichoroadmusic . To purchase tickets, stop by the SVC Theater, call 893-ABCD (2223), or visit svc.snow.edu .

• A few newsletters ago, we ran an item about a new, 30-acre “trailer park” in Monroe, which should be clarified. The development that is currently underway in Monroe is a 46-lot residential subdivision, with lots starting at 1/2 acre. Further, we heard from the proprietor who tells us:
“This development has protective covenants and an architectural control committee similar to all the other newer subdivisions in our valley. The difference between Luxury Estates and some of the others is that we will encourage the construction of factory-built homes, which will include manufactured homes and modular homes. We also will not discriminate against a much more costly approach such as site-built homes. Today’s factory-built homes are much more energy efficient than most site-built homes, which creates a much healthier environment for us all to live in. Virtually any floor plan can be made in a factory setting and the possibilities are endless as far as amenities. Because the homes are built under controlled conditions there is much greater control over labor cost, subcontractor delays and weather issues. If you think these homes are trailers — or even grandma’s old mobile home — please feel free to check out a factory built home; you may learn something new. More information will soon be on our website about Luxury estates subdivision which is www.luxuryhomesrichfield.com .”
The floorplans on their web site look outstanding — take a look! And, if you have something about your business you would like featured here, of if you hear about any local news items you feel need investigating, please let us know: ideallivingmedia@gmail.com or (435) 633-4195. Thank you!
• Due to their inflatables being worn out, Funtime Party Rentals is no longer renting inflatables at this time. However, they have a new line of concession products. Starting the middle of October, they will have a cotton candy machine, popcorn machine and a snow cone machine. These would be great for any party, open house, grand opening, or for a fundraiser. They also have a fog machine which would a great addition for a spooky effect for Halloween parties. Please visit their website at www.funtimepartyrentals.org for their full line of products.
• A DVD of the 2007 Extreme Horsemanship Challenge, held at this year’s county fair, is now available at the Richfield and Salina IFA Country Stores. This exciting contest tests horse and rider as they face extreme challenges, showing their courage and skill, all in a race against time.
• The Richfield Home Depot offers clinics for children to learn to use various wood-working tools, held on a Saturday morning once each month. Parents must be present.
• Movie Gallery in Richfield is selling their previously-viewed movies for 50% off their already marked-down price. Stop by to view their selection today!
• Do you need to advertise your business? Television commercials are regarded as the most effective medium to bring your offerings to the attention of consumers, and for good reason — which is why it is usually the most expensive way to market your business. But that’s not the case here in Central Utah! You can reach approximately 15,000 viewers right here in Sevier and Sanpete counties through Ideal Living on CentraCom cable’s Local10.
And the best part? The cost for your commercial is only $100 per month, plus free production!
Featuring engaging, all-local programming, presenting your custom-made commercial on Central Utah’s local television station is a proven, effective — and inexpensive — way to reach more customers.
If you want to hear from our current advertisers about their success, feel free to contact any of our current advertisers: Barney Outdoor Outfitters, Burns Saddlery, Christensens Department Store, Cove View Golf Course, Forever2Wheels & Paiute Powersports, Ideal Dairy, Lifetime Fitness, Little Wonder Cafe, Little Wonder Travel, Monroe Main Center, New Hope Baptist Church, Pepperbelly’s Restaurant, Richfield of Dreams Home Furnishings, Sandi’s Drive Inn, Sevier Valley Health Essentials, SOS Staffing Services, Staples Art Center & Gallery, or Rose Wichael-Realtor.
To schedule videotaping of your new commercial, contact Ideal Living Media by responding to this email address, or by calling (435) 633-4195.

WHAT’S NEW?
• The Richfield Home Depot is now open. The current “soft opening” will be followed up by a grand opening in a few weeks. It appears that starting salaries for cashiers is $9.50 per hour, with full medical benefits for full-time employees — and their families. There is much speculation that the new building supply retailer will lay off “extra” workers after a short while, as Wal-mart did when it first opened, however, representatives from Home Depot specifically deny any such plans.
• Meanwhile, Larsens Ace Hardware has nearly doubled their size, with a huge addition built onto the back of their store. It is so large, model airplane enthusiasts were using the addition to fly their planes around before the shelves and goods were moved in.
• It is reported that as many as 60% of the Home Depot’s many would-be job applicants failed their drug tests. Grumbling is still heard from many locals about changes made in the Drug Task Force after the last election, which some feel allowed drug trafficking to increase in the area.
• A DVD of the 2007 Extreme Horsemanship Challenge, held at this year’s county fair, is now available at the Richfield and Salina IFA Country Stores. This exciting contest tests horse and rider as they face extreme challenges, showing their courage and skill, all in a race against time.
• A group of leading IHC doctors, most employed at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, recently gave a presentation here in Richfield on their concerns about a proposed coal-fired power plant here in Sevier County. Members of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment — many of whom are noted respiratory system specialists — gave a fascinating series of presentations to a large, engaged crowd gathered at the Richfield Quality Inn conference center. The physicians, who stated they had no financial stake for or against the proposed plant, made it very clear that their statements were not matters of opinion, but scientific facts, backed by hundreds of medical studies, published in the world’s leading medical journals where only the most trustworthy and reliable research is published. Included among the several presentations were the following points:
– Medical research during the last ten years indicates air pollution is a more serious public health problem than previously thought, causing many serious illnesses, and aggravating many others.
– Air pollution’s effects are analogous to tobacco’s effects, causing a systemic inflammatory response in the arterial system that affects all organs and accelerates atherosclerosis — the clogging, narrowing, and hardening of the body’s veins and arteries, which leads to stroke, heart attack, eye & kidney problems, and thus eventually, death.
– Between 4 to 8% of all deaths in the United States are caused by air pollution – this means about 1000 premature deaths along the Wasatch Front each year.
– Cities along the Wasatch Front consistently rank among the worst air polluted areas in the United States, shortening life span of residents an average of 2 years.
– Air pollution limits the growth of lung capacity in children, permanently reducing lung function as an adult.
– Air pollution worsens existing asthma in adults and children and causes asthma and respiratory infections in those who are not otherwise predisposed.
– Air pollution increases the incidence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), low birth weight syndrome, premature birth, miscarriages, and still birth.
– Air pollution increases the incidence of the most common forms of childhood cancers, especially leukemia.
– Air pollution increases genetic damage in newborns, likely leading to increased adult diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and cancers. This genetic damage can be passed on to subsequent generations.
– Mercury, a contaminant of coal combustion, is the chief suspect in the alarming epidemic of neurobehavioral disorders, including autism. Coal power plants are the largest source of environmental mercury.
– Coal power plants are the largest source of nuclear radiation into the environment – far exceeding what properly functioning nuclear power plants produce – yet the nuclear waste within the ash from coal plants is not regulated or stored as carefully as that produced by nuclear plants.
The doctors also brought a major SLC real estate developer to comment on the financial impacts of air pollution (failed businesses, decreased property values, increased sick days, etc.), and Cherise Udell, founder of Utah Moms for Clean Air, invited local mothers to stand up and protect their children from the health consequences of air pollution. To view their presentations, tune into Local10 on CentraCom cable, or visit: http://tinyurl.com/2ddtbq or http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4624325104312704973 .
• Afterwards, Utah Moms for Clean Air formed a chapter here in Sevier County, making an impressive showing only days later at recent Planning Commission meeting. To join the group or learn more, contact Shanna Bastian at 896-7917 or email: monalisa_is_on@yahoo.com .
• The new Microtel hotel will break ground this coming Wednesday. The new hotel will anchor a new commercial development area located along Technology Drive (behind Wendy’s in Richfield). Plans thus far include an El Mexicano restaurant, a family fun center with an indoor go-cart track & more, and the Sizzler chain may also be interested in the area. To see what the new hotel will look like, visit www.microtelinn.com .
• The Rite Aid drug store chain is reportedly looking to buy up several properties in downtown Richfield to open a new store here. Besides a pharmacy, the small-supermarket-sized Rite Aid stores typically also offer “Foodmarts,” household items, and 1-hour photo developing. For the past year, the Rite Aid chain has been adding in-store health clinics with Certified Nurse Practitioners to offer medically-supervised treatment for weight control, common family illnesses, diagnostic screenings, and vaccinations.
• Reportedly, Hales Sand & Gravel has been sold to another party, although Hales family members and other employees are said to be staying on in the company.
• In a recent work session with the Sevier County Planning Commission, NEVCO principal Rod Clark said that housing for construction workers for the tentative plant could be provided by new dorms which could be built on the grounds of Snow College-Richfield, in a plan he said was suggested by Rick White. Initial response by local parents has been critical of the plan, apparently due to discomfort with the idea of having the types of workers who build such plants in close daily contact with students on the campus.
Mr. Clark of NEVCO told the commissioners in the same meeting that mental health services would need to be sharply increased in the county to deal with the expected high levels of drug use, alcohol addiction, family violence and other problems which are apparently common among the type of migrant construction workers who build such plants.
Mr. Clark also brought up that a man camp for the construction workers for the coal plant was proposed to be built by two local “entrepreneurs”, which would eventually be turned into a “resort.” However, some believe the Jorgensen’s planned “resort” — recently approved by local government — has actually been intended to be the man camp for the proposed plant, suggesting that the Jorgensens may not need any further approval from the Planning Commission before opening the man camp, whether it becomes a “resort” some day or not.
• In Hal & Jean Ward’s newsletter about the Sevier County real estate market, they noted that “this past summer saw some of the quietest market months in years. Few buyers shopped the market and very few sales came together in what is typically the area’s best selling season. Even though the mortgage meltdown has not affected Central Utah as deeply as in high density markets, the market has been off track.” For more info, including a projection for the market this winter, sign up for their free newsletter at www.centralutahhomes.com.
• Richfield High School recently performed a wonderful rendition of the Broadway classic, 42nd Street, at the Richfield City Park pavilion — even during closing night, when a pouring rain storm drenched actors, audience and back stage helpers alike. Yet, in what is surely some kind of upset, it will be South Sevier High which will play the Wild Cats during their own rendition of Disney’s mega-hit, High School Musical, later this year.
• For great deals on trips to the Disneyland Resort, Mexico, or exotic cruises, be sure to visit www.LittleWonderTravel.com. Disney is offering great discounts on vacations this year.
• The Richfield UPS store is offering a 35¢ sale on color copies now through until October 20. The local shipping and copy store has never offered color copies at such a low cost before, which are printed on very good quality paper, using an all-new color printing system.
If you are interested in buying a timeshare being sold by a long time local family, which can be traded for time at resorts across the globe, please visit http://timesharesrus.blogspot.com .
• Many Sevier Citizens spent two grueling, marathon days at the Air Quality appeal hearings this week in Salt Lake. The Utah Supreme Court had granted access to the Utah Sierra Club and Grand Canyon Trust to contest the permit Utah’s Division of Air Quality had issued for NEVCO to build their proposed plant. The appeal is ironic, not only because the Division of Air Quality has presided over such proceedings while Utah has become the site of some of the worst air pollution in the nation, but because the appeal on the Division of Air Quality’s permit was to be made to the Division of Air Quality itself. Not surprisingly, the group ruled that their boss’s boss did not err in giving NEVCO/Sevier Power an unannounced 18-month extension to their permit, apparently based upon a technicality. Other issues, including whether the tentative plant’s fluidized bed system, which was invented in the 1930s, is the best available technology, and whether IGCC technology, which captures CO2 and other pollutants, is “available” or not, will be decided on November 7.
Sevier Citizens, who attended the meeting in large numbers yet were not allowed to speak for their previously allotted time, are planning an appeal to the Environmental Protection Agency. Says a representative of the group, “We’re still fighting.” Meanwhile, the Utah Sierra Club will surely be considering its legal options as well, since a further appeal would go before a judge instead of the Division of Air Quality itself.
An open letter from NEVCO/Sevier Power principal, Ken Flake, was sent within the “Best of Sevier” mailer this past week. Mr. Flake, who stands to make millions from the project, stated that the E.P.A. had approved similar plants in Uintah County, suggesting that the NEVCO plant should similarly be allowed to go forward. In yet another irony, approvals for the Uintah plants — which are located on Native American lands and thus fall under the federal control of the E.P.A. instead of Utah’s Division of Air Quality — have been attacked by Congress as failing to uphold federal laws recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, and are the subject of enormous controversy as reported in many media outlets (see http://tinyurl.com/3xqz2g ). In any case, the fate of these proposed plants is now in doubt as well.
• Predictions continue to surface that the SUFCO mine will be closing by 2013 at the latest. Some wonder if coal miners will find work in the explosion of uranium mining in the Marysvale area, which is based in the belief that new generation nuclear plants will be being built in the near future. Meanwhile, Sevier County officials are said to be concerned that, if the mine were somehow expanded to get harder-to-reach deposits — if any exist — that the portal to the mine could be moved to Emery County, resulting in a loss of all taxes coming from the mine, since taxes are based in where the mine reaches the surface.
• Central Utah Food Sharing has made several recent changes to its operations at its Richfield branch. More food will be given to its many elderly and “working poor” clients each month. Clients will now need to make an appointment during the food bank’s newly-extended hours. This will allow those in need to “shop” themselves for the food and other household products their family would prefer. Clients using the new system have complimented CUFS staff for making the process more personal, helpful, and allowing them to be more responsible for themselves. For more info, or to set an appointment, visit CUFS at 9l East 1000 South in Richfield or call 896-5225.
Meanwhile, the Utah Food Bank-sponsored free “DROPS” program continues to be a growing success, where fresh fruits, vegetables, and other foods not often available at the food bank are made available to anyone qualifying for WIC, Food Stamps, or food bank programs. The DROPS program is held at noon at the Richfield food bank on the fourth Thursday of every month. Thanks go out to Roene Shaw and the food bank’s wonderful staff and volunteers.
• Monroe is hosting numerous Halloween festivities this year, with many events benefiting Central Utah Food Sharing. Look for posters with events and times coming soon to bulletin boards and windows at our local stores. Support the food bank by bringing a few cans of food to these fun, upcoming events.
• Straight from the jungles of Dagobah, Star Wars’ Jedi Master, Yoda, is here in Richfield. Stop by Richfield of Dreams, at 147 North Main Street in Richfield to see the diminutive sage (or at least a life-sized, life-like statue of him). Also appearing at Richfield of Dreams is Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin, along with many delightful home decor items, inexpensive, high-quality mattresses, sofa-loveseat sets, tables and more. Visit their new web site at www.richfieldofdreams.com.
Just down a few doors is the new “Discount Furniture Outlet,” a side-venture of Jerry Larsen and Richfield’s Ogden Furniture. Also, a new, IKEA-like home furnishings store is said to be in the works for south Richfield.
• With the coming holidays, thoughts turn, of course, to… Black Friday. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, the biggest shopping day of the year, and the traditional start of the holiday shopping season — even though many of us start shopping much earlier. Wouldn’t it be nice to view the ads before Thanksgiving Day, to help plan purchases in advance? Now you can — just visit http://blackfriday.gottadeal.com or www.blackfriday.info to view Ace Hardware’s coming ad now, with many more coming soon. (Some sites have 2006 ads still posted for comparison).

Video: Sevier County, Utah Planning Commission – with NEVCO/Sevier Power (July 2006)
October 4, 2007 by Ideal Living Staff

The July meeting of the Sevier County (Utah) Planning and Zoning Commission. The Commission considers: – The building of a new, Cingular mobile communications tower; – Western Land Services’ drilling of a new exploratory oil well; and, – What was thought would be a presentation of plans for a highly controversial, proposed coal-fired power plant in Sigurd, Utah from NEVCO (a.k.a. TDA Foundation) (a.k.a. Sevier Power Company). A lawsuit has been filed in Utah’s Sixth District Court over this and other meetings. The suit, from the Sevier Citizens for Clean Air and Water against the Planning Commission and the Sevier County Commission, alleges ethics violations, including conflicts of interest, by the Planning Commission. Some of these violations allegedly become apparent in this meeting.
