Sevier Power Company Moves Out

NEVCO/Sevier Power Company has abandoned two of its three locations within Sevier County.
First, it has closed its offices on Main Street in Richfield. A representative stated that since there was “absolutely nothing” going on at the office, the controversial business was not going to have an office, at least “until there is a power plant in Sevier County.”
More importantly, the company has notified county leaders that it is also abandoning its efforts at creating a coal ash dump near Koosharem, on property where water flows into the drinking water of Salina City.
As reported here previously, there are growing concerns that the coal ash could have contributed to mercury and uranium poisoning locally, especially in children, which has been shown in recent studies to increase cases of miscarriage, retardation, hydrocephaly, microcephaly, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, as well as other serious health complications and birth defects.
The eight-year-old project is thought to have no funding for construction of the proposed coal-fired power plant, where it owns (or has options on) land it wants to build the plant, near 186 homes in the town of Sigurd.
In a recent Salt Lake Tribune editorial (reprinted below), James Kennon, president of Sevier Citizens for Clean Air and Water stated, “It’s time for SPC to swallow its losses and move on. We don’t want this plant. What we do want is clean energy, clean jobs and a healed community.”
